Description
In Rona, Delphine, Colette, Suzanne, and the Others, Sandrine Rondard brings together a striking group of female figures drawn from film, performance, music, activism, and art history. The painting includes Delphine Seyrig in Peau d'Âne, Rona Hartner in Gadjo Dilo, Noée Abita in Ava, FEMEN activists, Pussy Riot singers, Colette, Princess Mononoke, Uma Thurman in Kill Bill, Joséphine Baker, and Susan Sarandon with Geena Davis in Thelma & Louise. On Geena Davis's T-shirt appears Adèle Haenel in Les Combattants. The composition also features a Botticelli figure, tattooed and armed.
These figures historical, fictional, cinematic, and political, coexist within the same suspended pictorial space. Rondard does not portray them as conventional portraits, but as presences and energies. Performers, fighters, actresses, singers, and activists appear together, forming a collective body shaped by resistance, emancipation, and transformation.
Drawing on cinematic staging, Rondard constructs the composition as a charged scene in which each figure assumes a symbolic role. The painting becomes a gathering of female energies across time, where personal memory, cultural icons, and political struggle converge. The work stands as both homage and reinvention: a contemporary mythology of female presence, in which singular figures merge into a shared and enduring force.
Presentation
Sandrine Rondard is a French painter, graduated from the École nationale d'art de Cergy-Pontoise (DNSEP) and the École nationale des beaux-arts de Dijon (DNAP).
Her work explores landscapes and youthful figures through threshold atmospheres, often situated between day and night, where light becomes uncertain and points of reference begin to dissolve. Influenced by cinema and art history, her painting oscillates between figuration and abstraction.
Her canvases function as fragments of open narratives, reminiscent of contemporary tales or suspended cinematic scenes. The landscape becomes both a refuge and a disturbing territory, a space for projection of the uncanny, where painting itself remains the true subject, driven by an ongoing exploration of light, movement, and the transformation of the image.
