Still Life with Pumpkins, 2019

Volodymyr Kovalov

This contemporary oil painting presents an expressive still life composed of pumpkins, a glass bottle, and dried branches arranged against a dark interior background. The composition is compact and horizontally structured, where rounded organic forms contrast with the vertical silhouette of the bottle, creating a clear and balanced visual rhythm.

The color palette is rich and saturated, combining deep greens, warm oranges, and yellow highlights with earthy browns and near-black tones. This contrast enhances depth and intensifies the atmospheric quality of the scene. Executed in a modern expressionist manner, the painting features bold brushstrokes, pronounced texture, and layered oil paint with visible drips that emphasize materiality. Light is directional and dramatic, modeling volume while allowing areas to dissolve into shadow.

The work explores the relationship between color, form, and surface, presenting still life as a dynamic and tactile composition within a contemporary painterly language.
