Description
Just a Mushroom (2026) by Zakhar Shevchuk is a contemporary figurative painting that explores simplicity, spontaneity, and intuitive expression. The work presents a stylised mushroom rendered in a restrained yet expressive manner, set against a muted and textured background.
The composition is intentionally straightforward. The mushroom stands alone, without contextual narrative or symbolic framing, allowing the viewer to focus on its form, colour, and presence. The red cap, accented with light brushstrokes, introduces a vivid contrast to the subdued greys and earthy tones surrounding it. This contrast enhances the visual clarity of the subject while maintaining a calm and balanced atmosphere. What distinguishes this work is its origin in pure impulse. Rather than constructing a layered conceptual framework, the artist allows the act of painting itself to guide the result. This approach gives the piece a sense of immediacy and authenticity, positioning it within contemporary painting practices that value intuition alongside structure.
Just a Mushroom is particularly appealing to collectors interested in minimalist figurative works that combine simplicity with expressive depth. Its compact size and distinctive character make it a versatile addition to both modern interiors and curated art collections.
Presentation
“I try to simplify the form to the point when it feels that nothing else shall be removed and only the essential elements remain. I transfer my impressions and self-reflections about objects into my paintings. I express what I feel rather than how I see, often arriving somewhere between figurative and abstract art." Zakhar Shevchuk
Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.
With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
