Description
Created at the outbreak of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, this self-portrait captures Oleksii Aleksandrov in a state of raw vulnerability: bare-chested, emaciated, his gaze fixed and serious as he looks directly at the viewer. Behind him, a spectral female presence with a golden halo—a tutelary figure who is at once muse, mother, and Byzantine icon—envelops him in a protective embrace.
The painting creates a head-on collision between two iconographic registers: the tradition of the Orthodox icon (the halo, the hieratic frontality, the Marian pose of the embracing figure evoking a vision) and the most raw, carnal expressionism, in the vein of Egon Schiele, Lucian Freud, or Zoran Mušič. The gray, livid flesh, traversed by flayed reds, speaks of the suffering of a body-country.
On the right, grotesque elements emerge as in a waking nightmare: a military vehicle and below, a small demonic figure with childlike and disturbing features — an inner demon, a mute witness, or an allegory of an innocence corrupted by war.
Oleksii Aleksandrov, a Ukrainian painter trained in the rigor of post-Soviet academic drawing but nourished by sacred iconography and Nordic expressionism, produces here a manifesto-work: the self-portrait as body-territory, where the intimate becomes political, where the flesh of the artist bears the stigmata of a nation at war.
Presentation
Ukrainian painter Oleksii Aleksandrov, a refugee in France since the beginning of the war, defines himself as "an artist without a nation, without a style, without a school." Far from his family and familiar surroundings, he resolutely pursues a pictorial approach he considers his raison d'être. His work, marked by rupture and exile, conveys a vision of a world in ruins without ever seeking to seduce: he confronts, reveals, and accuses.
Participation in several group exhibitions and artistic events, including:
Oleksii Aleksandrov's work is constructed through the juxtaposition of brushstrokes, forming veritable mosaic canvases, devoid of frames and punctuated by ruptures. This deliberate fragmentation gives rise to a singular expressive force: an intense, chaotic, and sincere beauty, at once violent and mystical.
His influences draw from:
It follows in the tradition of Otto Dix and Käthe Kollwitz: a painting of testimony and accusation, which rejects complacent aesthetics to reveal the raw truth.
