Description
In this work, a woman and a large, bright red parrot sit side by side on the same perch, enclosed within a conditional metal arch—resembling both a cage and a stage set. The woman is folded into a compact, tense pose, almost like a bird, but not because she wants to resemble one—rather, it is as if she has been pressed into this shape. She holds her head, covering part of her face, trying to hide herself from чужих gazes and from the voice that sounds beside her.
The parrot is a symbol of repetition, imitation, and the demand to be loud, bright, and visible. In the context of the series “Trained Femininity," it embodies the expectation of socially “smiling" expressiveness: to speak when required, to say what is expected, to be vivid, “interesting," always on display. Its presence next to the woman creates a striking contrast: the bird is loud and demonstrative, while she is quiet, compressed, and turned inward.
The woman and the parrot sit on the same perch, yet there is no equality between them. The bird takes up more space, as if pulling attention toward itself—just as external voices and standards often drown out a woman's inner voice. Her posture conveys a tired attempt to preserve an inner space in a context where she is expected to project outward brightness.
The background is built from sharp strokes of blue and red intersected with golden lines—it resembles an energetic field filled with noise, movement, and endless expectations. This decorative chaos intensifies the feeling of a cage that has no physical bars, yet clearly defines a role.
In this scene, the woman does not imitate the parrot, even though they are placed side by side. Her compressed posture is a protest against the demand to be “loud," “bright," “convenient." The parrot, traditionally known for repeating others' words, becomes here a symbol of the social “dictate of loudness" that speaks in place of the woman, expecting her to imitate it.
The painting speaks of a muted voice in a loud world. Of a woman who sits beside a symbol of imposed expression, yet chooses silence as a way to return to herself.
