Description
This acrylic composition from 1990 explores the central motif of the artist's creation. Three sheep rest in a fragmented space. The animal silhouettes stretch with graphic simplicity. Their bodies adopt saturated shades of pink and dark green.
The background is structured by a play of colored blocks. Washes of yellow, blue, and purple delineate geometric areas. These shapes create a sharp contrast with the organic curves of the animals. The touch is direct and assured.
The painter draws here from his memories of youth within a kibbutz. The sheep becomes a symbol of innocence and memory. The scene abandons realism to favor a figurative and expressive approach.
The movement of the brushstrokes brings a jerky rhythm to the whole. The dark ground anchors the composition while leaving room for bluish reflections. The visual balance rests on the opposition between the rigor of the architectural lines and the softness of the animal forms.
Presentation
Menashe Kadishman (1932–2015) was an influential Israeli painter and sculptor known for his unique artistic vision that blended minimalist influences with deeply symbolic themes. Born in Tel Aviv, he studied sculpture under Moshe Sternschuss and Rudi Lehmann before moving to London in 1959. There, he immersed himself in the minimalist art movement and formed connections with artists such as Anthony Caro. His first major exhibition took place at the Grosvenor Gallery, marking the beginning of an international career.
Kadishman’s early experiences as a shepherd in a kibbutz during the 1950s had a profound impact on his art. This connection to nature and animals became a defining element of his work, culminating in his 1978 Venice Biennale installation, where he famously presented a flock of painted sheep. This theme remained central throughout his career, with his expressive depictions of sheep becoming his signature motif. In the 1990s, Kadishman also created powerful works for the Jewish Museum in Berlin, addressing themes of memory, loss, and the victims of war and violence, particularly in reference to the Holocaust. His contributions to Israeli art were recognized in 1995 when he received the prestigious Israel Prize.
Kadishman’s legacy continues to thrive in the global art scene. His works remain highly sought after by collectors, and his sculptures and paintings are frequently displayed in major museums and exhibitions worldwide. Recent retrospectives have revisited his impact on contemporary sculpture and painting, shedding new light on his innovative use of color and form. His sheep paintings, in particular, continue to resonate with audiences, symbolizing themes of sacrifice, innocence, and collective memory. His public sculptures, many of which stand in Israel and beyond, remain lasting testaments to his artistic and cultural influence.
