You learned it early. Maybe so early you don't even remember learning it.
Don't move too fast. Don't speak too loud. Don't want too much, feel too openly, shine too brightly. Don't be different. Don't be you — at least not the full version, not the real one. Because the moment you do, they will notice. And when they notice, they will come.
"The Stillness Tax" is about the price of that silence.
She stands completely still. Her blue eyes are open, clear, watchful — the eyes of someone who has learned to be absolutely present without betraying a single thing of what moves inside her. Around her, covering her, claiming her — the bees. Enormous, heavy, undeniable. They nest in her hair like thoughts she cannot release. They settle on her shoulders like responsibilities she never chose. They crawl across her chest like the weight of every word she swallowed to keep the peace.
And she does not flinch. She barely breathes.
Because that is the rule in a toxic environment — the one nobody writes down but everybody knows. Be still and you are safe. Conform, disappear into the pattern of what is expected, make yourself small and predictable and unremarkable — and they will leave you alone. Step outside that invisible boundary, exhale too loudly, dare to be different — and the swarm descends.
So she pays the tax. Every single day. The tax of stillness. The tax of silence. The tax of performing a version of herself that fits comfortably into the world's narrow idea of acceptable.
But look at her eyes. Really look.
She is not broken. She is not defeated. She is waiting. Patient and quiet and completely, devastatingly alive beneath the weight of every bee that thought it had claimed her. The flowers still bloom in her hair. The red behind her still burns. Something in her refuses — quietly, stubbornly, absolutely — to be extinguished.
This painting is for everyone who has ever made themselves smaller to survive. Who knows the exhausting mathematics of calculating exactly how much of yourself you are allowed to be today. Who has held their breath so long they forgot what it felt like to simply exhale.
