Description
Watercolor expresses itself here with great delicacy. The line is light. The composition focuses on the back of a seated woman. Her posture suggests introspection and calm.
The gaze is immediately drawn to the hair. A mass of dark and nuanced touches forms a dense volume. Blue and violet intertwine subtly within it.
The garment, a deep blue, structures the center of the composition. The transparency inherent to the technique allows the light to show through. The flesh is rendered with warm and golden tones. The rendering is fluid. The skin seems almost luminous under the effect of the washes.
The artist prioritizes sensation over anatomical precision. The background remains clean to accentuate the subject's presence. A few purple touches at the base anchor the silhouette in space.
This approach is in line with an impressionist tradition. It explores the sensuality of forms and the softness of colors. The whole exudes a deep serenity. The final rendering plays on the contrasts between the density of the hair and the lightness of the body.
Presentation
An English teacher by profession, Paris-based Isabelle Hirtzig began her career as an artist through the medium of watercolor. Through her light touch of the paintbrush, she is able to capture much emotive feeling. Her work depicts scenes based on subjects as diverse as flowers, Parisian scenes, landscapes, animals and portraiture. Her focus remains on the psyche and art—its sensuality and softness are perfectly accentuated through the watercolor medium.
