Description
There is nothing particularly well-behaved about Pink Ice-cream. Its heroine stares out with enormous green eyes, cheeks blazing red, tongue already extended toward a pink ice pop. She is funny, excessive, slightly ridiculous — and completely comfortable with herself.
Yana Medow takes the familiar language of the female portrait and disrupts its good manners. Instead of poise, she gives us appetite. Instead of an elegant pose, a spontaneous physical reaction. The face is pushed so close to the picture plane that there is barely room for anything except expression, while the ice pop echoes the pink of the tongue and becomes almost an extension of the body.
What makes the painting particularly engaging is its refusal to settle into one register. The flowers in the hair and candy-colored palette suggest something innocent and playful; the gaze is far more knowing. Humor slips into sensuality and back again.
Yana Medow does not ask her heroine to choose between being beautiful, awkward, desirable, childish, funny, or provocative. She lets her be all of these things at once. And perhaps that contradiction is precisely the point: pleasure rarely looks as composed as paintings have historically asked women to be.

Presentation
Yana Medow is a contemporary figurative artist based in Alicante. She studied painting restoration at the Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design from 1997 to 2003. Her early professional experience as a painting restorer, graphic designer, and illustrator shaped her attentive approach to surface, color, and the expressive potential of line.
Since 2020, Yana has focused entirely on her independent artistic practice. Working in contemporary figurative painting, she explores the expressive language of the human body and the poetic complexity of femininity. Her paintings are defined by flexible graphic lines, strong color contrasts, and figures that are often elongated or subtly distorted, allowing gesture and posture to become carriers of narrative.
For Yana, the body communicates emotions more honestly than words. Her characters move within a space between elegance and quiet absurdity, where beauty can coexist with irony, vulnerability, and subtle tension. These shifts create images that feel both theatrical and intimate, inviting the viewer to interpret the story through personal perception.
Yana's works have been presented internationally, including exhibitions in Barcelona, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Marseille, and Brooklyn. She has participated twice as a street artist in the Pinta Malasaña in Madrid. Her work has also been featured by Soho Home and appeared in the television series Apples Never Fall. She is the winner of the REBIRTH Art Competition by The Holy Art Gallery.
Through expressive figurative imagery and subtle narrative tension, Yana Medow creates paintings that reveal the emotional richness of human experience—where femininity appears playful, powerful, vulnerable, and self-aware at once.
