Description
Mixed technique — burlap, acrylic, pigment, coffee grounds, Caribbean sand, cowrie shells.
She comes from the depths.
On a black background, almost abyssal, La Pescadora emerges like an apparition. Her face, made of coffee grounds and Caribbean sand, seems to bear an ancient earth, a buried memory, something that slept long beneath the sea before rising to the light.
On her head, she wears a fish. But this fish is not an ordinary fish. It is inhabited. A multitude of my little imaginary characters have settled on it. They look at each other, hide, search, watch us. Some have eyes of small cowries, shells laden with memory and protection, in the spiritual universe that nourishes my work. Among them watches the presence of Elegguá, guardian of paths and passages.
The fish then becomes a miniature world, a strange creature, a vessel of the imagination. La Pescadora carries it as one carries a dream, a memory, a secret world. Beneath her, blues succeed each other like waves: ultramarine blue, deep blue, midnight blue, Caribbean blue. The dress seems to blend into the sea while her body remains suspended between two spaces.
What does she fish?
I don't really know.
Perhaps forgotten dreams.
Buried stories.
The faces of those who inhabit us.
The memories that refuse to disappear.
Perhaps she simply fishes what sleeps at the bottom of us.
In my work, the materials are also fragments of memory. The Caribbean sand, the coffee grounds, the burlap, the shells, and the paint become a skin, a territory where earth, sea, human and the invisible meet.
La Pescadora dives into her own abysses and rises with a world on her head.
A strange world.
A populated world.
A world of hers.
And perhaps also… a little of ours.

Aconcha – Singular and multidisciplinary art
French-Cuban artist born in Havana, Aconcha deploys a free and intuitive practice that crosses painting, sculpture, drawing, artist objects, travel journal, performance, and music. Inspired by the Orishas of the Yoruba pantheon, she is part of the movement of raw and singular art as well as contemporary art of the African diaspora.
Her canvases are teeming with colors and intertwined collages, populated by secret signs, such as the Deep Woman, both diurnal and nocturnal.
Through her universe, Aconcha connects the intimate and the ancestral, raw art and the sacred, inviting everyone to cross the boundary between visible and invisible and to reconnect with their own part of enchantment.
