Description
Oil on wood, on a Sicilian cart side panel
From the “Carretti" (Sicilian Carts) series.
In this striking work, Maurilio Catalano transforms an authentic Sicilian cart side panel into a contemporary pictorial surface, combining traditional Sicilian decorative motifs with his distinctive ironic and visionary language.
At the centre, a red moray eel, rendered in an almost heraldic and highly stylised form, is pierced by a series of brightly coloured lines. Set against an intense blue background, the figure creates a powerful contrast and evokes themes of wounding, movement and transformation.
The richly decorated frame—featuring flowers, geometric patterns, intertwined motifs and small angelic figures—recalls the visual heritage of Sicilian carts, while Catalano reinterprets it through a contemporary perspective.
The work becomes a dialogue between Sicilian tradition and contemporary art, where the cart itself, with its history and popular imagery, becomes an integral part of the artwork.
Presentation
Maurilio Catalano born in 1942 in Palermo.
Since 1963, he directs the Gallery and printing house "Arte al Borgo". He has received the Ignazio Buttitta Award 2009. As a Sicilian artist, you can feel the presence of the sea and ocean in his works. His ludic approach gives a dreamy sensation to his artworks which the spectator feels and can dream it as a personal experience especially for the empty spaces that he leaves intentionally in his paintings.
