In , Achao revisits the circular form of the mandala in order to shift its function. The circle no longer establishes a fixed order; instead, it becomes a field traversed by forms, rhythms and transformations.
The golden surface, worked through rubbing, striations and areas of reserve, provides the foundation for a pictorial language based on layering. Vegetal, floral and geometric motifs are repeated, displaced, altered in scale and fragmented.
Yet the use of stencilling and repetition produces no sense of mechanical reproduction. The motifs appear instead as infinite variations on a musical score. Green, turquoise, yellow and fluorescent pink establish distinct rhythms: the vegetal forms seem to propagate, while the pink signs punctuate and accelerate the movement of the gaze.
This visual language enters into dialogue with several histories of painting. One can perceive the legacy of Matisse in the freedom of the forms and their organisation beyond perspective, and that of Claude Viallat in the principle of repetition and the importance given to the recurrence of a single motif. The presence of gold, meanwhile, connects the work more broadly to a decorative tradition that Klimt profoundly renewed. Matisse's late work is particularly relevant here, as his cut-outs explored the relationship between organic forms, colour, composition and positive and negative space.
The mandala itself is transformed: from an ordered representation of the world, it becomes a space of circulation. The eye encounters neither a true centre nor definitive symmetry. It moves, returns, branches off and gradually discovers new relationships between the forms.
The evoked by the title lies precisely in this passage from sign to motif, from motif to rhythm, and finally from rhythm to a broader perception of the living.
With , Achao thus continues a practice in which painting is not conceived as an image of the world, but as a space of permanent transformation.
Achao is a French artist born in 1966 who lives and works in Chamalières, France.
Serenity and Joy: The Ephemeral in Motion by Achao
The artistic universe of Achao, a French artist, invites you to a deep contemplation and serenity. His works stand out through a juxtaposition of transparent motifs that create blur effects, encouraging a certain introspection. Through his creations, Achao captures the essence of a world in perpetual motion while offering both a visual and spiritual experience. His art aims to convey a sense of joy, inner peace, and harmony. At the heart of Achao's painting lie three categories of motifs. The first is inspired by Henri Matisse's cut-out papers, where color and form intertwine to create a graceful dance. The second category pays homage to the bas-reliefs of the Dhamek Stupa in Sarnath, an iconic Buddhist site in northern India. Here, the profusion of organic motifs infuses a deep spirituality. Finally, Achao explores the enchanting entanglement of bubbles, transforming them into an infinite network of lines that enhances the immersive quality of his large-format paintings. Color plays a central role in Achao's works. Each color palette is meticulously crafted to resonate with the viewer's emotions, creating an atmosphere that encourages tranquility and joy. The bold use of color not only captivates the eye but also evokes a sense of harmony and balance. The palette ranges from serene pastels to more vibrant tones.
Achao regularly exhibits in France, Belgium, and Italy, fostering an intimate dialogue with the spaces and audiences. His paintings have traveled to iconic venues such as the Institut français Centre Saint-Louis in Rome and the Angelica Gallery. A monographic exhibition was dedicated to him in the rotunda of the Saint-Paul campus of the Catholic University of Lyon (UCLy). He has also exhibited at the Halles Saint-Géry in the center of Brussels. Achao's paintings are presented on unstretched canvas. A suspension system is integrated into the upper part of the canvas. This metal system, slid into a sleeve, conceals the nails or screws used for hanging. You may also choose to frame the painting or mount it on a stretcher. The artwork is shipped in a very sturdy tube, ensuring its protection. For larger-scale projects, Achao is available for on-site collaborations, adapting his artistic vision directly to your space. This personalized approach fosters a deeper connection between the artwork and its environment.
