Description
In this 2015 painting, Luca Crivello depicts a naked child seen frontally and immersed in an undefined space dominated by a dark background. The body, rendered with great attention to flesh, light and materiality, appears deliberately disproportionate and distorted, transforming realistic representation into a powerful expressive image.
The face, with its open mouth and almost completely closed eyes, conveys a sense of unease and vulnerability. The innocence traditionally associated with childhood is thus questioned, taking on an ambiguous and almost unsettling character. The strong contrast between the illuminated figure and the dark background focuses the viewer's attention on the body and heightens the psychological tension of the composition.
The work reflects Crivello's exploration of contemporary figurative painting, where a mastery rooted in pictorial tradition meets a freer and more visionary interpretation of reality. The precise treatment of the painted surface coexists with the distortion of the figure, creating an intense image suspended between expressive realism, unease and symbolic meaning.
Presentation
Luca Crivello was born in Palermo in 1992. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Palermo, specializing in Contemporary Sacred Art and focusing particularly on figurative painting and the fresco technique. In 2015, he attended the Florence Academy of Art, and in 2017 he obtained his Master’s degree with highest honors.
His artistic research focuses on the human figure, through a form of painting suspended between tradition and contemporary expression, characterized by particular attention to light, materiality, and the psychological dimension of his subjects. Alongside easel painting, he has created frescoes and participated in significant artistic and conservation projects.
He has exhibited in several exhibitions in Italy and abroad, and his works are held in private and institutional collections. He currently teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts of Catania, while continuing his artistic practice and research.
