Description
For Odile Raoul, the famous monumental cliffs of Étretat represent both the dramatic force and the raw poetry of nature. The Aval cliff is the most well-known of them. According to the writer Guy de Maupassant, it is "an elephant plunging its trunk into the sea". It inspired Claude Monet to create dozens of canvases based on the hours of the day. Odile thus fits into the tradition of French landscape painters.
A clean composition captures the essence of a Normandy coastline. The gaze travels between an azure sky and a sea of deep blue. The chromatic contrast emphasizes the clarity of the atmosphere.
The artist favors flat areas of color. The cliffs stand with geometric rigor. White and gray respond to each other to convey the verticality of the rock.
The stylized treatment simplifies natural forms. The horizon line divides the space with precision. The sand, in neutral tones, guides the eye towards the marine expanse.
This acrylic painting made in 2023 is part of a contemporary approach to the marine landscape. The light is diffuse, without cast shadows.
