Description
Sweet but Strong is a celebration of quiet resilience—the kind of strength that does not rely on hardness, but grows through empathy, vulnerability, and self-awareness. Built from expressive geometric fragments, luminous layers of acrylic, and energetic marker lines, the portrait reveals a personality composed of many emotional experiences rather than a single fixed identity. The face emerges from a vibrant mosaic of intersecting shapes, suggesting that every challenge, memory, and connection becomes part of the person we ultimately become. The composition balances boldness with tenderness. Brilliant greens, electric blues, vivid oranges, and rich violets create a dynamic visual rhythm, while delicate white linear marks weave across the surface like invisible emotional threads, connecting every fragment into a unified whole. Floral motifs and circular forms soften the composition, introducing moments of growth, hope, and renewal that contrast with the angular structure of the portrait. Rather than concealing vulnerability, Sweet but Strong embraces it as an essential source of inner power. The painting invites viewers to reconsider conventional ideas of strength, suggesting that compassion, openness, and authenticity can be just as powerful as determination. Through its vibrant palette and layered symbolism, the work celebrates the beauty of remaining gentle while facing life's complexities with confidence and resilience.Medium: Acrylic and markers on canvas.Size: 40 × 40 cm.Shipping: The artwork will be carefully packed and shipped in a protective box. This work is ideal for collectors of contemporary abstract and figurative art who are drawn to expressive portraiture, bold color, and psychologically layered compositions. It will particularly resonate with those who appreciate artworks exploring identity, emotional resilience, and the balance between vulnerability and strength. With its vibrant palette and striking visual presence, Sweet but Strong is perfectly suited to modern, contemporary, eclectic, and minimalist interiors, adding energy and personality to private homes, creative studios, boutique hotels, and thoughtfully curated art collections.
Presentation
Marianne Fanous (b. 1985, Cairo, Egypt) is a self-taught contemporary Egyptian artist who lives and works in Cairo. Although she holds a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy and Biotechnology, she has cultivated her artistic practice independently through years of experimentation, intuition, and an enduring commitment to creative exploration.
Fanous draws inspiration from her Christian faith, Egyptian identity, the country's landscapes and agricultural heritage, and the organic forms found in nature—particularly palm trees and the rhythms of the natural world. Working through expressive abstraction, she explores themes of creation, hope, belonging, and transformation, creating paintings that celebrate both the richness of the natural environment and the resilience of the human spirit.
Her practice is defined by spontaneity, expressive mark-making, and an intuitive approach that allows each composition to develop organically rather than through predetermined planning. Rich textures, layered surfaces, and vibrant color palettes create immersive visual experiences that invite contemplation, joy, and emotional connection.
Fanous works across acrylic, oil, watercolor, ink, acrylic markers, and mixed media, often incorporating metallic elements and tactile surfaces that enhance the physical presence of each painting. Her works balance expressive freedom with a deep sensitivity to landscape, memory, and spirituality.
She has participated in group exhibitions in El Gouna and Egypt's North Coast.
Through her practice, Marianne Fanous seeks to cultivate a renewed sense of curiosity and childlike wonder, encouraging viewers to encounter nature, faith, and everyday life with openness, gratitude, and hope.
