Presence 5 — Being and Nothingness
A meeting at the edge of the visible.
In Where Two Worlds Meet, Jono Sugiartono creates a layered pictorial space where forms overlap, colours merge and fine lines move across shifting boundaries. The composition gives visual expression to an encounter between what can be seen and what remains concealed.
Burgundy and terracotta establish warm passages within a field of deep green, blue and turquoise. Cream, pale yellow and pink introduce softer transitions, allowing light and shadow to coexist throughout the canvas.
An intricate network of pale lines crosses this changing ground. Some form loops around rounded shapes; others stretch diagonally between distant areas. Their intersections connect the composition while making its divisions less definite.
Rounded forms with yellow centres bring concentrated points of light into the image. Around them, translucent-looking passages and denser textures create a rhythm between revelation and concealment. The eye moves through these layers, discovering relationships that become apparent through sustained looking.
Created with glass dust and acrylic on canvas, the work combines tactile substance with atmospheric handling of colour. Its granular surface grounds the painting's philosophical subject in a physical encounter with material.
For Sugiartono, being and absence belong to the same unity. Within Presence 5 — Being and Nothingness, this painting considers the boundary between them as a place of meeting and recognition.
The handwritten message on the reverse completes the work's conceptual dimension:
“At the edge of being and nothingness, the deepest truth reveals itself."
