Description
The Dutch artist explores here the border between figuration and abstraction. The face emerges subtly through a play of superimposed textures. The composition fragments into horizontal lines and blocks of color. The gaze seems to get lost in a fog of pigments.
The technique combines oil and acrylic to create a tactile relief. The palette knife sculpts the material with precision. Muted and warm tones dominate the canvas. Gray intermingles with white and earthy brown.
Some touches of ochre come to illuminate the whole. The human subject remains central despite the formal deconstruction. This approach transforms the classical portrait into an atmospheric study. The balance rests on the contrast between the sharp areas and the blurred passages.
The quick and rhythmic execution brings a particular dynamism to the surface. This painting dated 2024 testifies to a rigorous technical mastery. The final rendering reveals traces of thick paint and deliberate scratches.
Presentation
This Dutch painter lives and works in Amsterdam. Its vibrant energy, historical architecture and the enormous cultural diversity of its inhabitants are a constant source of inspiration.
Edo has loved and lived to paint since his early childhood working alongside his grandfather, the Dutch naïve artist Cornelis Kaaij.
His unique style is a fascinating blend of the figurative and abstract merging successfully to create a new approach to the human face.
“I'm always looking for a balance between the contrast of abstract and figurative form in my work, whereby I often let the subject prevail."
Edo Kaaij's paintings transmit the beauty and kindness he sees in people around him. A skilled mix of pallet knife and warm subdued colours build layered textures.
