Description
Richard K Blades is an expressive English landscape painter in the English Romantic tradition. He follows in a long line of artists such as Turner, Constable, Seago, Daubigney and Courbet who chose the sky, sea and land as their source of inspiration. Painting with oil on board his works use thick paint to capture the crash of a wave, the setting sun, the whistle of a gentle breeze or roar of a blowing gale.
The span of centuries matters little. Technology has advanced, society has shifted, but the landscape is always there, as something eternal, the ever-changing muse, always present, yet never the same.
Atmospheric power defines this oil painting. The composition captures a fleeting moment on the Norfolk coast. Heavy clouds dominate the upper frame. They swirl in shades of charcoal and muted violet. A soft, pale light breaks through the centre. This creates a dramatic contrast between storm and serenity.
The horizon line stays low. It allows the vastness of the sky to breathe. Below, the shoreline blends into deep ochres and earthy blacks. The artist employs a rich, textured application of paint. Thick strokes evoke the raw energy of the wind. There is a timeless quality to the lighting. Soft pinks and golds bleed across the distant waterline. This suggests the quiet transition of twilight.
The artwork transforms a coastal vista into a meditation on nature. It balances the weight of a gathering storm with the delicacy of a fading sun. The gaze is led from the turbulent heights down to the stillness of the wet sand.
Presentation
Richard was born in 1978 and raised on the border of Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. His passion for painting began whilst living in Cornwall in his mid twenties. Having grown up in East Anglia, much of his work is based on and inspired by the skies and landscapes of the area. Along with the landscape, he is also a still life painter, fascinated by the quiet corners of studios and how light falls upon objects and plants.
Richard, who lives and works in North Norfolk, says of his work
“I am primarily an expressive landscape painter working in the English Romantic tradition.
I feel a deep connection to the landscape and the artists who also chose the sky, sea and land as their source of inspiration. Turner, Constable, Seago, Daubigney and Courbet are personal favourites of mine. The gaps of generations and hundreds of years matter little. Regardless of what has changed in this world, the technological advancements and societal shifts, the landscape is always there, as something eternal, the ever-changing muse, always present, yet never the same. ”
Richard’s work is regularly exhibited across the UK and is held in private collections, worldwide.
