Description

Four female figures gather on a golden-yellow shore, their bodies outlined in loose, expressive strokes against horizontal bands of blue, lavender, and warm gray. Some stand upright while others lean or crouch toward the ground, creating a quiet rhythm of different gestures. The figures' luminous yellow-green skin, rosy cheeks, and simplified features give the scene an unusual character, suspended between a familiar seaside gathering and a world shaped entirely by color.

Borderlands belongs to In Search of Yellow, a series exploring color as an independent state of being and a visual language for emotions that resist words. Here, yellow is more than the color of sand or sunlight. It surrounds the figures, enters their forms, and becomes the atmosphere in which they exist.

The restrained outlines and unfinished passages give the composition a spontaneous, intimate quality. Blue bands suggest distant water, while the warm ochre foreground brings the figures together within a shared space. Their different postures invite curiosity without revealing a definite story, leaving the relationships and emotional undertones open to interpretation.

Combining contemporary figuration with expressive color, the artwork invites viewers into an unconventional beach scene where observation gives way to feeling. Its warmth is balanced by a subtle ambiguity, making the composition both visually playful and quietly thought-provoking.

Materials: Oil on canvas.

Shipping / Display: Ready to hang. The artwork is shipped in a protective box.

Golden yellow, mustard yellow, yellow-green, warm ochre, cobalt blue, dusty lavender, muted pink, terracotta, olive green, warm gray, dark brown.

For collectors interested in contemporary figurative art, unconventional representations of the human body, and paintings that use color to communicate emotion. Its playful yet ambiguous character will resonate with those who appreciate expressive compositions that leave room for personal interpretation.

The strong yellow palette brings warmth to contemporary living rooms, creative studios, dining areas, and eclectic interiors. The muted blues and earthy outlines temper its brightness, making it particularly effective alongside natural wood, warm neutrals, and understated modern furniture.

Style: Contemporary figurative painting, expressive figuration, color-driven painting, stylized figurative art.

Presentation

Alina Petkune, professionally known as Art Dalyna, is a Latvian-born contemporary multidisciplinary artist based in Daugavpils. She has participated in more than 100 group exhibitions and presented over 30 solo exhibitions throughout Latvia and abroad. Her work has been featured in major exhibitions at the Mark Rothko Museum, the Art Academy of Latvia, and international projects in Lithuania and Estonia. Petkune is a long-standing member of the Daugavpils Regional Artists' Association and the mystical artists' collective Sarkanais akmens ("Red Stone"), and is the founder of the ethnic artists' group DENSA. Her works are held in the collections of the Daugavpils and Rēzekne museums.

Alina holds a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Design and three Master's degrees from Daugavpils University in Graphic Art, Ceramics, and Art Pedagogy. She is currently continuing her studies in Painting at the Art Academy of Latvia after completing studies in Sculpture. Alongside her artistic practice, she has worked as a museum educator, exhibition curator, art teacher, and art therapist.

Working across painting, graphic art, sculpture, textile, and mixed media, Alina creates symbolic visual narratives rooted in folklore, mythology, ecology, and portraiture. Drawing inspiration from Baltic ethnic traditions, literature, nature, and what she calls "village magic," she transforms myths and everyday experiences into contemporary allegories where reality and imagination coexist.

For Alina Petkune, each artwork becomes a living myth. Through layered materials, expressive forms, and symbolic imagery, she explores the space between the personal and the collective, the ordinary and the sacred, inviting viewers to rediscover wonder in the world around them.
