Description
An architectural structure is outlined through a play of dense textures. The eye travels through a labyrinth of rectangles and broken lines. The work plays on the material creates a marked relief. Shades of deep blue intermingle with tones of ochre and off-white.
The composition evokes an aerial view or a fragmented urban facade. Each stroke seems superimposed to build a complex grid. The light glides over the paint layers, revealing areas of shadow and clarity.
The balance rests on the opposition between geometric rigor and spontaneous gesture. The chromatic contrast emphasizes the depth of the space. The density of the pigments brings a tactile dimension to the whole.
The artist explores here repetition and superposition. The final rendering oscillates between pure abstraction and the representation of a metropolis. The whole stabilizes on a mineral and sober palette.
Presentation
Alain Bécanne is a painter, born in Toulouse in 1957.
Alain got interested in painting only in his forties. Initially he was interested by figurative painting, and realized his first exhibitions quite quickly.
Finally in 2002, Alain changed gears and turned towards abstraction, a lyrical abstraction mainly inspired by great names of movement. This change has an influence on his manner of painting and technique.
Alain's work around abstraction quickly turned towards the question of light and its reflections. Whether the canvas is monochrome, black or white, the artist is always able to create light. He likes to work on shades, reflections that each color has to offer.
Light is an important part of Alain's paintings, he doesn't stick to only one way of processing but considers it to be an effect, a way to highlight his subject.
Material is a key aspect in Becanne's work, the painter likes to work with layers and thickness, each of his movements is visible, the paint on his canvas portrays image of his trace.
