Description

"Feelings Unbound" (2026) – Original Contemporary Abstract Expressionist Painting by French Artist Natalya Mougenot

"Feelings Unbound" (2026) is an original contemporary abstract expressionist painting by French artist Natalya Mougenot, featuring expressive layers of vibrant pink, coral, peach, orange, yellow, turquoise, electric blue, green and deep burgundy acrylic brushstrokes on a 94 × 94 cm (37.01 × 37.01 inches) professional cotton canvas. Combining spontaneous gestures, energetic marks and contrasting textures created with acrylic paint and acrylic pens, the work explores emotional freedom, vulnerability and the beautiful complexity of human feelings.

From the series "The Truth Within"

"Feelings Unbound" is an expressive abstract painting that explores the complexity of human emotions and the importance of allowing ourselves to experience life in all its intensity. Through a dynamic interplay of colour, movement and spontaneous gestures, Natalya Mougenot transforms the invisible world of feelings into an energetic visual composition.

Part of her ongoing abstract series "The Truth Within", this work reflects a central question in the artist's philosophy: how can we remain true to ourselves when we are constantly trying to control, understand or hide what we feel?

In everyday life, we often learn to manage our emotions according to what is expected of us. We hide our vulnerability, silence certain thoughts and sometimes pretend that everything is fine when our inner world tells a different story. We may even become so accustomed to controlling our reactions that we gradually lose touch with what we genuinely feel.

For Mougenot, authenticity begins with recognising and accepting this inner complexity. Being true to ourselves does not mean experiencing only positive emotions or always knowing how to respond to difficult situations. It means having the courage to acknowledge our feelings without judging ourselves, understanding that vulnerability and strength are not opposites but two essential dimensions of being human.

In "Feelings Unbound", this emotional complexity takes shape through an explosion of colour and movement. Luminous pinks, soft peach and warm coral tones spread across the upper part of the composition, creating an atmosphere of tenderness, sensitivity and openness. They meet intense turquoise and electric blues, vivid greens and energetic orange and yellow accents. Deeper burgundy, brown and almost black gestures introduce moments of tension and intensity, giving the composition additional depth and emotional weight.

One of the most intriguing aspects of this painting is the contrast between its delicate and forceful elements. The soft pink and peach passages seem almost tender and luminous, while the darker, more vigorous gestures introduce a sense of turbulence and raw emotional energy. These contrasting qualities do not cancel each other out. Instead, they coexist, creating a visual dialogue between softness and intensity, lightness and depth, vulnerability and strength.

This duality reflects something deeply human. We are rarely defined by a single emotion or state of mind. We can be sensitive and determined, peaceful and restless, joyful and uncertain, strong and vulnerable at the same time. Sometimes, the gentlest part of ourselves exists alongside the most intense, and neither needs to disappear for the other to be real.

The colours seem to move freely across the canvas, sometimes overlapping, sometimes confronting one another, creating unexpected connections and rhythms. There is no single dominant direction or fixed visual structure. Instead, the composition unfolds like an emotional landscape in which different feelings emerge, collide and gradually find their place.

The combination of acrylic paint and acrylic pens adds another dimension to the work. Broad, expressive brushstrokes interact with finer, more immediate lines and marks, creating layers of movement and contrasting visual rhythms. Some gestures appear almost instinctive, as though captured in a single moment, while others overlap and accumulate, suggesting the complexity of thoughts and feelings that develop over time.

The title "Feelings Unbound" refers to the freedom that comes from no longer suppressing our emotional experience. It is about giving ourselves permission to feel deeply, to acknowledge contradictions and to accept that we do not always have to be composed, certain or in control.

Joy, sadness, excitement, frustration, tenderness, anger and hope are not isolated experiences. They can exist together, sometimes unexpectedly, shaping the way we perceive ourselves and the world around us. By allowing these different emotional states to find expression, the artist suggests that freedom does not necessarily come from eliminating inner conflict, but from accepting the full spectrum of who we are.

For Mougenot, painting is itself an act of emotional exploration. Her creative process is guided by intuition, movement and a willingness to follow the unexpected. She does not seek to reproduce a predetermined image or impose strict rules on the development of a composition. Instead, she allows colours, gestures and textures to evolve through an ongoing dialogue with the canvas.

This approach reflects her belief that authentic artistic expression requires freedom from excessive control. Every gesture has its own energy, every colour its own emotional character, and every decision contributes to the evolving identity of the work. The result is an abstraction that preserves the spontaneity and honesty of the creative moment.

Mougenot's expressive approach also resonates with the legacy of abstract expressionist artists such as Joan Mitchell, whose use of vigorous brushwork, layered colours and rhythmic movement demonstrates how painting can communicate emotional intensity without relying on recognisable imagery. Like Mitchell, Mougenot explores the expressive possibilities of colour and gesture, while developing her own visual language rooted in personal experience, authenticity and emotional exploration.

For the artist, the meaning of a painting does not end with its creation. Sharing the thoughts and experiences behind her work is an important part of her artistic practice. She believes that art can create meaningful connections between people, opening conversations about emotions, personal values and the experiences that unite us.

Nevertheless, "Feelings Unbound" does not impose a single interpretation. Each viewer is invited to discover their own meaning within its colours and expressive forms. The painting may evoke freedom, excitement, inner transformation or perhaps the memory of a moment when different emotions were experienced all at once. The delicate pinks may speak to one person's sensitivity, while the darker gestures may resonate with another's inner struggles. What begins as an expression of the artist's inner world can become something entirely personal in the eyes of the observer.

Ultimately, "Feelings Unbound" is a celebration of emotional honesty and the freedom to be ourselves. It reminds us that we do not need to hide every contradiction, control every reaction or have all the answers. We are not just one feeling, one identity or one version of ourselves. We are an entire world of emotions, sometimes contradictory, always evolving and deeply human.

Created as part of "The Truth Within", this original abstract expressionist painting reflects Natalya Mougenot's continuing exploration of authenticity, vulnerability and personal freedom through colour, movement and spontaneous artistic expression.

Presentation

Natalya is a contemporary  french artist living in Lyon.

She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.

She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.

She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.

In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism,  which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.

As an artist and as a woman  she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion,  is the pillar for the inner adult.

Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.

She works  rapidly  and is constantly sensitive  to the details.

Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
