Description

“Beloved Provence" — Contemporary Abstract Landscape Painting, 2026

Beloved Provence is an original contemporary abstract landscape painting from 2026, an expressive colourist artwork in acrylic on paper, measuring 59.4 × 84.1 cm (23.4 × 33.1 in), inspired by the landscapes, fields, flowers and luminous summer light of Provence in the South of France, with artistic references to Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse and Paul Cézanne.

Beloved Provence is a deeply personal interpretation of the South of France, inspired by Natalya's love of Provence and the landscapes she returns to for their extraordinary light, colours and sense of freedom. Rather than depicting a specific location, the painting captures the emotional memory of Provence—its sun-filled fields, distant hills, abundant vegetation and dramatic summer skies.

The composition moves between landscape and abstraction. Broad horizontal layers suggest cultivated fields, meadows and distant vegetation, while expressive marks of yellow, pink, orange and green evoke wildflowers scattered throughout the Provençal countryside. Above, large clouds unfold across an expansive blue sky, painted with energetic white, lavender and pale pink brushstrokes. The landscape is recognisable, yet its forms remain deliberately simplified and transformed through colour.

Natalya approaches Provence not as a scene to reproduce faithfully, but as a place to feel. The intense green of the vegetation, flashes of lemon yellow, vivid pink, orange and deep violet create the sensation of a landscape saturated with Mediterranean sunlight. Darker passages add depth and contrast, allowing the brighter colours to emerge almost like bursts of wildflowers across the fields.

The work carries a strong connection to the artistic heritage of Provence. Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse and Paul Cézanne all found essential sources of inspiration in the South of France, responding to its distinctive light and landscape in profoundly individual ways. Natalya similarly transforms her experience of Provence through colour, gesture and simplification rather than attempting a literal representation.

Van Gogh's influence can be sensed in the emotional intensity and dynamic brushwork, while Matisse resonates in the liberation of colour from strict naturalism. Cézanne's relationship with the Provençal landscape is particularly relevant to Natalya's approach: the landscape becomes something to reinterpret and reconstruct through the artist's personal vision rather than simply reproduce.

The visible brushwork gives Beloved Provence its tactile and spontaneous character. Horizontal strokes build the fields and distant landscape, while more vertical and gestural marks animate the foreground vegetation. Small touches of colour appear throughout the composition like fragments of flowers and sunlight, creating rhythm and movement across the surface.

At the heart of the painting is a feeling of belonging, freedom and affection for a place. The title Beloved Provence reflects not only the physical landscape but the emotional attachment it can inspire—the sensation of returning somewhere familiar and immediately feeling surrounded by beauty.

The painting therefore occupies a space between expressive landscape, floral abstraction and contemporary colourist painting. The viewer can recognise a Provençal countryside, yet the longer one looks, the more the landscape dissolves into colour, texture and gesture.

Beloved Provence is ultimately a celebration of the South of France as Natalya experiences it: radiant, generous, colourful and alive—a landscape transformed into an emotional memory through paint.

Framing:
The artwork is painted on heavyweight professional acid-free paper and is unframed.

The artwork is created in the standard A1 format (59.4 × 84.1 cm / 23.4 × 33.1 in), making it easy to frame using a readily available A1 frame.

For a contemporary gallery-style presentation, the artwork can be placed in an A1 frame with glazing, in natural wood, white or black depending on the interior. A simple A1 frame without a passe-partout can display the full artwork at its original dimensions.

The frame is not included.

The interior images showing the artwork framed are for inspiration only, illustrating different ways the artwork could be presented in an interior.

Presentation

Natalya is a contemporary  french artist living in Lyon.

She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.

She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.

She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.

In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism,  which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.

As an artist and as a woman  she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion,  is the pillar for the inner adult.

Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.

She works  rapidly  and is constantly sensitive  to the details.

Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
