“Loved Home" is a contemporary expressive acrylic painting on canvas by French artist Natalya Mougenot, measuring 80 × 80 × 1.5 cm (31.5 × 31.5 × 0.6 in), exploring the emotional meaning of home, belonging and the simple rituals through which a place becomes deeply personal.
For Natalya, home is not simply a physical space. It is the emotional atmosphere we create around ourselves — the place where memories accumulate, where ordinary objects become precious, and where we experience a sense of safety, warmth and belonging. Loved Home reflects this idea: the familiar domestic world becomes a symbol of the people, memories and emotions that make a place feel truly ours.
The painting is deliberately joyful and saturated with colour. The intense blues, vivid yellows, warm oranges, deep reds and fresh greens are not intended to reproduce reality literally. They express the emotional intensity of the experience of home. Natalya uses colour as a language: she amplifies it, liberates it from naturalistic representation and allows it to carry feelings of warmth, happiness, intimacy and vitality.
This is where the influence of Henri Matisse becomes particularly relevant. Natalya is inspired by Matisse's radical understanding of colour — his belief that colour could exist beyond its descriptive function and become a source of emotion in its own right. Matisse transformed interiors and everyday domestic scenes into vibrant compositions in which colour, pattern and simplified forms create a feeling of harmony and pleasure.
Natalya's dialogue with Matisse is not about imitation. She shares his conviction that a painting can communicate an atmosphere rather than reproduce an objective reality. Like Matisse, she allows colour to become independent from what the eye would conventionally expect: a wall does not have to remain the colour of a wall, a vase does not need to imitate a real vase, and a flower can become an explosion of colour and feeling.
Yet Natalya brings this principle into her own contemporary visual language. Her approach moves between figuration and abstraction, with recognisable forms simplified through expressive contours, visible brushwork and spontaneous gestures. The painting retains the intimacy of an observed domestic scene while simultaneously becoming something more universal and emotionally charged.
The deliberately energetic outlines and painterly marks are also important. Natalya does not seek to hide the physical act of painting. The gesture remains visible, allowing the viewer to sense the artist's hand and the immediacy of the creative process. This gives the work a sense of movement and vitality rather than the stillness of a conventional still life.
At the centre of Natalya's practice is the belief that the visible world is only the starting point. She paints familiar subjects because they carry memories and emotions. A home, a woman, a landscape, flowers or an everyday object can become a doorway into something less visible: love, belonging, freedom, tenderness, memory or joy.
In Loved Home, the domestic setting therefore becomes almost symbolic. It speaks to the universal human desire to create a place where we feel safe, connected and loved. The title does not simply describe a home that is loved; it suggests a home that has itself become filled with love.
The work may particularly appeal to collectors who are drawn to contemporary figurative art, expressive still life, vibrant colour and paintings with a strong emotional narrative. It is a piece for someone who sees the home not merely as an interior, but as a repository of memories and a reflection of the life lived within it.
Ultimately, Loved Home is Natalya's celebration of something deceptively simple: the beauty of having a place — and the people, memories and emotions within it — that make you feel you belong.
Natalya is a contemporary french artist living in Lyon.
She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.
She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.
She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.
In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.
As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult.
Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.
She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details.
Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
