Description
“Black Dress" is a contemporary figurative oil painting on canvas by French artist Natalya Mougenot, featuring a female figure as a vehicle for exploring femininity, inner strength, mystery and self-expression. Measuring 80 × 60 × 1.5 cm (31.5 × 23.6 × 0.6 in), the work belongs to Natalya's broader artistic exploration of the female experience and the many emotional dimensions of being a woman.
Since 2022, women have become an important and recurring subject in Natalya Mougenot's practice. She does not paint women simply to represent their physical appearance. She paints them to explore what exists beneath the surface — identity, freedom, vulnerability, confidence, sensuality, resilience and the complex relationship a woman has with herself.
For Natalya, the female figure offers an open space through which to express emotions that are often difficult to put into words. Her women are intentionally not conventional portraits. Their faces and identities may remain ambiguous because the artist wants the viewer to look beyond the individual and connect with the emotion, energy and psychological presence of the woman.
This approach makes each figure universal rather than belonging to one particular person. A collector can encounter their own story in the work: a woman they recognise, a part of themselves, or a feeling they have experienced.
Natalya's distinctive style lies in the space between figuration and abstraction. She begins with the recognisable human form but gradually allows it to dissolve into expressive lines, spontaneous gestures and intense colour. Rather than following academic realism, she uses distortion and simplification deliberately, giving priority to emotional truth over physical accuracy.
Her visible brushwork is an essential part of this language. The painting retains the energy of the artist's hand — the movement, hesitation, layering and spontaneity of the process remain present on the surface. Colour becomes more than decoration: it becomes a way of communicating psychological states. This combination of recognisable femininity, expressive abstraction and emotionally charged colour creates a visual language that is distinctly her own.
With , Natalya is interested in the idea of a woman who does not need to reveal everything about herself in order to possess presence. Mystery can be a form of strength. Silence can be powerful. And femininity does not need to be explained or defined by others.
This painting may particularly resonate with collectors who are drawn to contemporary figurative art, strong female subjects, expressive painting and works with an emotional or psychological dimension. It can speak especially to those who see art not simply as an image to decorate a space, but as something that carries a sense of identity and invites personal interpretation.
Ultimately, Natalya's women are not portraits of . They are invitations to recognise something within ourselves.
Presentation
Natalya is a contemporary french artist living in Lyon.
She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.
She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.
She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.
In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism, which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.
As an artist and as a woman she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion, is the pillar for the inner adult.
Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.
She works rapidly and is constantly sensitive to the details.
Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
