Description

In Kokusai Sojourn : Samurai Cat's Midnight Cruise, Hiro Ando orchestrates a cinematic nocturne where urban velocity and ancestral symbolism collide.
This oil on canvas (80 × 120 cm), from the series Samuraicat Serenades : Tokyo Nocturnes with Flowers and Clouds, situates the iconic Samuraicat within the hyper-illuminated arteries of Tokyo after dark.
The composition unfolds at a metropolitan crossroads, where taxis, neon signage, and architectural facades construct a dense contemporary stage.
At the right foreground, Samuraicat appears inside a Kokusai taxi, transformed into a vigilant passenger navigating the sleepless city.
His stylized feline features retain the quiet authority of a samurai, merging warrior ethos with pop iconography.
Opposite him stands a schoolgirl figure, blade in hand, subtly invoking Ando’s sculptural homage to Battle Royale and reinforcing themes of resilience and duality.
Above the traffic stream, Nishikigoi drift across the sky, disrupting realism and introducing symbolic elevation.
These koi embody perseverance and destiny, echoing the disciplined spirit of the samurai tradition.
Ando’s signature flowers and swirling clouds animate the nocturnal firmament, creating a rhythmic counterpoint to the rigid urban grid.
The deep cobalt sky intensifies the chromatic dialogue between red blossoms, glowing signage, and reflective surfaces.
Tokyo is rendered not merely as backdrop but as psychological terrain.
The juxtaposition of mythic feline guardian and contemporary cityscape reflects Ando’s ongoing meditation on tradition confronting modern acceleration.
Light becomes narrative—each reflection a pulse within the metropolitan bloodstream.
The taxi, a transient vessel, symbolizes passage and transformation.
The canvas balances theatrical staging with graphic clarity characteristic of Nippon Neo Pop.
Through layered symbolism and cinematic framing, Ando bridges sculpture, painting, and urban mythology.
This work stands as a vivid chapter within the Samuraicat cycle, where the warrior spirit navigates global modernity.
For collectors, it offers an exceptional opportunity to acquire a composition that synthesizes cultural memory, pop aesthetics, and Tokyo’s electric nocturne into a single commanding statement within Hiro Ando’s contemporary oeuvre.

Presentation

Hiro Ando was born in 1973 on the island of Shikoku in Japan. Hiro Ando started his career as an illustrator in 1995. In 2005 he founded with Saori Nakamishi an artist studio in Tokyo to manage the creation and promotion of other young neo-pop artists who express their own popular culture in their creations. Today the studio "Crazynoodles" has ten artists.

Hiro Ando is a versatile artist. He works in oil on canvas, digital media or video. His technique consists of making several sketches before painting on canvas. The painting shapes itself and emerges in the streets of Tokyo at night, and combines lots of colors and graphics. Hiro paints dark cityscapes and goldfish all over the canvas.

The marriage of the two subjects makes the whole of the painting dynamic and violent, with a strange feeling of eternity given by the goldfish which recall old Japanese paintings and watercolors. The sculpture is a recent addition to the media used by Ando, who started working on a series of orange, green sculptures ... inspired by Japanese popular culture. Thus the cat, which is a lucky charm in Japan, like the Maneki-Neko, takes different forms such as the samurai or the sumo wrestler.

The artist translates this theme into a modern style. The shiny and smooth materials, the vivid colors, the brutal but rounded shapes of Hiro Ando's sculptures take us to the world of manga in which the artist's generation grew up. Hiro Ando's art is the meeting between the Meiji era and Manga, he is Shogun in the world of Pokemon, he is traditional Japan seen through the eyes of young people: he certainly belongs to Japanese neo pop art.
