Description
A bold exploration of identity. This oil painting captures a face through a lens of intense color and raw emotion. The composition vibrates with energy. A deep blue background pushes the subject forward. Yellow tones dominate the skin. They create a luminous, almost electric glow.
The brushwork is decisive. It moves between precise definition and expressive abstraction. Shadows are rendered in cool blues and earthy reds. This contrast adds a psychological depth to the gaze. The eyes remain the focal point. They are piercing and contemplative.
The artist blends a classical figurative approach with a contemporary spirit. He transforms a simple likeness into a study of inner tension. Subtle drips and splatters break the formal structure. These marks suggest a sense of fragility or dissolution. The artwork balances harmony and chaos. It reflects a sophisticated understanding of light and volume. Every stroke contributes to a narrative of human complexity. The piece concludes with a sharp contrast between the warm face and the cold, saturated void of the backdrop.
Presentation
Guy Ghazanchyan is a contemporary Armenian painter and sculptor, born in 1991 in Yerevan into a family of renowned artists. The son of painters Gagik Ghazanchyan and Lilit Soghomonyan, and grandson of sculptor Nona Gabrielyan, he was immersed in a rich and stimulating artistic universe from a very young age.
He studied painting at the Armenian State Academy of Fine Arts from 2007 to 2013, graduating with the highest distinction, the Eduard Isabekyan Prize, for his work I Know Where It's Flying. In 2012, he was selected for a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, an experience that marked a turning point in his artistic career.
Ghazanchyan's work explores profound themes such as freedom, identity, and collective memory, often through expressive portraits and symbolic compositions. His major series include Behind the Walls (2016), awarded the Presidential Youth Award; AKANates (2021), exhibited at the Yerevan Museum of Modern Art; and IUVENIS (2022), which celebrates contemporary Armenian youth.
His works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions around the world, including in Washington DC (Traveling Without Moving, 2017), Rome (Subconscious is Freedom, 2025), Zurich, Naples, Groningen, Beirut, and Los Angeles. In 2019, he became a member of the Artists' Union of Armenia.
