Description
Close Before Striking IX, 2014 Image size: 20 in. H x 16 in. W Frame size: 24 in. H x 20 in. W x 1 in. D Collage, watercolor, and graphite Mounted on a white frame.
This artwork is a striking mixed-media composition that captivates through its bold use of portraiture and text. It features four faces, each with distinct, expressive features rendered in a style that combines realism with abstract elements. The faces are painted on a muted brown background, creating a stark contrast with the vivid colors and white accents used within the portraits. The top left portrait shows a figure with blue-tinted glasses, complemented by overlaying circular and linear markings, suggesting a sense of introspection or complexity. Below it, text reads: "He's sitting where he used to be an optimist," adding depth to the imagery by introducing a narrative of change or disappointment. The top right face is marked with red and black brush strokes, with the word "fear" prominently above. The accompanying line, "She finally forgot about it," implies a narrative of overcoming or suppressing fear, adding an emotional layer to the visual expression. At the bottom left, the face is outlined with stark black hair, against which the simple, poignant phrase "She was someone they all liked here" is juxtaposed. This text evokes themes of past acceptance and community identity. The bottom right image combines bold red horizontal lines across the eyes with the phrase "She can see the," followed by an obscured text, leaving an air of mystery and inviting viewers to speculate about the completion of the thought. Overall, this artwork stands out for its compelling integration of text and image, drawing viewers into a multifaceted exploration of identity, emotion, and personal narrative. The deliberate use of color, line, and text invites contemplation and evokes a range of emotional responses, making it a powerful piece of contemporary art. The framing in a simple white border further accentuates the raw, unfinished energy of the work, suggesting a glimpse into intimate, evolving stories.
Presentation
Roberto Fonfría lives and works in Miami, Fl. He was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1969. Roberto Fonfría creates stories through a random mix of found images, photographs, drawings, and words. He combines these elements and builds layers and textures using acrylics, common objects, and collage. His work explores human behavior and social rules with a critic eye and humor, touching on personal themes such as dreams, fears, and memories. The images come from old magazines, advertising and photo albums collected at thrift stores. By extracting them from their natural context, he reconstructs them by adding references to popular culture as well as common phrases and insights that come from his Venezuelan childhood.
