In the Chinese pictorial tradition, the interplay between paper and ink encompasses gesture, form, and language—an osmosis of drawing and writing, for "the single brushstroke is the root and primal origin of calligraphy and painting."

The brushstroke represents the impression left behind—a perspective Ji Songlin brings to the photographs he selects and interprets. He seeks not merely to capture images, but to fix—as if gathering traces from a specific era—memories that are the stuff of fantasy. Projected and re-photographed by the artist, these images imprint the porous memories of objects or people destined to slowly fade and slip into oblivion. Through this process, Ji Songlin reveals the very heart of his work: not a technique, a pictorial tradition, or a medium, but a reflection on the individual's place in society and the fragmented nature of memory. His work captures fleeting moments and emotions that often go unnoticed, inviting viewers to reflect on their own personal narratives and on how memories shape our identities even as they fade away.
