Hongos y cuchara. From the Bodegones series, 2021

Dora Franco

This intriguing artwork presents a surreal still life, featuring a cluster of mushrooms meticulously bound by rustic twine. The fungi protrude from a carved wooden bowl, their slender stems and rounded caps glistening under subtle lighting, creating an interplay between texture and shadow. Suspended in mid-air, the twine connects to a polished silver knife, suggesting tension and potential movement. The dark, textured background contrasts sharply with the smooth, rich grains of the wooden table, enhancing the composition's depth and drama. This piece uniquely marries the organic with the industrial, inviting viewers to ponder the delicate balance between nature and human intervention. The harmonious color palette of earthy browns and muted grays adds to the artwork's contemplative and arresting presence.

The bodegones are a pictorial interpretation based on a research project of the famous chef Juan Carlos Franco, on old food recipes of different periods in history. The photographer recreated the images inspired by paintings and images from these eras, also finding inspiration from artists such as Leonardo DA Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, and others. Each image by photographer Dora Franco is accompanied by a detailed, visual description of the moment, light, and colors of the scene. Franco always observes how light touches things, how it beautifies and shadows them. In her exploration of everyday life, the photographer discovers magical moments that aesthetic information allows her to highlight, resulting in an enhancement of the beauty of the object or person she photographs.
