Description

Kilgour French & Stanbury - A shop window display in Savile Row, London, photographed in the late 1990s. The irony is unmistakable: the mannequins stand ready, yet there are no suits to dress them. A curious mystery for the display of a celebrated bespoke tailoring house. Savile Row is synonymous with the highest standards of British tailoring, and Kilgour French & Stanbury was among its most distinguished names. Founded in 1880 as T & F French, the business evolved through a series of mergers and partnerships, becoming Kilgour & French in 1923 before adopting the name Kilgour French & Stanbury in 1937 following the arrival of brothers Fred and Louis Stanbury, whose elegant cutting style helped define the house's reputation. In 2003 the company was rebranded simply as Kilgour, a name it continues to trade under today, primarily through its online presence. This photograph captures a fleeting moment in the history of a renowned tailoring institution. The premises themselves have since changed hands, while the empty mannequins remain an intriguing visual paradox: silent ambassadors for craftsmanship, standing in anticipation without the very garments for which the house became famous. Against the backdrop of Savile Row's long tradition of bespoke excellence, the scene offers a subtle reflection on change, continuity and the passage of time.
