Description
This photographic portrait captures a moment of fragility and strength. A child stands up, still, facing the lens. The gaze is direct, almost solemn. The contrast is marked by the wearing of a dark armor, whose rigid shapes envelop a slender body.
The composition plays on the opposition between the innocence of childhood and the warrior symbolism. A complete sword completes the ensemble, held with calm assurance. The black and white treatment emphasizes the purity of the lines and the texture of the materials. The neutral background eliminates any distraction to concentrate attention on the subject.
The image questions the notion of protection and the transition to adulthood. The precision of the C-print reproduces every detail, from the freckles on the face to the reflections on the protective plate. This photograph, taken in 2007, is part of a research on the identity and staging of the young subject. The visual balance rests on the verticality of the character and their weapon.
