This print is from the book "OVERGROUND, déroutants voyageurs", 2006, Bze & Tomski, Paris, Editions Alternatives.
This shot captures a suspended moment in Morocco. The image plays on a strong contrast between the darkness of the background and the light. Luminous streaks intertwine in the foreground. They form an abstract and dynamic circle. This graphic movement partially obscures a face. The gaze is focused on this superposition between reality and abstraction.
The technique mixes photography with manual interventions. The use of acrylic and ink on the support brings a tactile dimension. This approach transforms an everyday scene into a graphic composition. The artist explores here the boundary between portrait and drawing.
The final rendering is a fine art print made in 2004. The precision of the grain and the depth of the blacks emphasize the nocturnal aspect of the scene. The tight framing accentuates the intimacy of the moment. The white and warm light guides the eye towards the center of the image. This work combines the rigor of the photographic frame with the freedom of the calligraphic gesture.
Presentation
Bze has been tagging since he was 12. He writes on his school table, his clothes, the walls and public transport in his environment.
In parallel with university studies in photography and cinema, Bze explored the underground corners of Europe with his film camera, hunting for the aesthetics of the road, the street, the margins and its people. Since 1999, through exhibitions and slideshows between Granada and Rotterdam, he has shared his thousands of slides. In 2006, Bze finalized his photographic journey with a book called Overground, confusing travelers published by Éditions Alternatives. A unique, almost sociological look, revealed by a selection of more than 600 photographs of the counterculture with its communities, demonstrations, squats, free parties...
Following his meeting with the artist Nef, they created the Nef&bze© graphic studio (focused on electronic music).
Returning to his roots, the aesthetics of the letter, Bze devotes himself in the studio to painting on canvas or paper. His contemporary calligraphy, Neo-writer, tends towards minimal abstractionism.
