About the artwork
Artwork sold in perfect condition
Bernard Frize is a French artist born in 1954 in Saint-Mandé. He lives and works in Paris as well as in Berlin.
Bernard Frize began to gain notoriety in the 70s for his paintings "All over," through which he showed from the start a willingness to challenge the codes of painting. He stands particularly against the concepts of style and the status of demiurge creator. As proof, he often uses assistants, and changes its own biographical information according to the magazines, in favor of painting alone. Because "the market always demands the same image from artists, because people do not look at the painting, they simply recognize it" Bernard Frize covers his tracks by changing his style to disorient the viewer.
For Bernard Frize, the essential lies in the act of painting itself, an organized spontaneity that is at the heart of the creative process. To establish "the conditions of chance" -according to his own words- he sets up a number of technical limitations allowing him to create semi-random shapes sometimes even humorous.
Bernard Frize is represented by the Perrotin Gallery(Paris), the Simon Lee Gallery (London), Micheline Szwajcer Gallery(Antwerp), and at the St. Stephan Nächst Gallery(Vienna). His works are present in many prestigious international collections such as the Museum moderner Kunst in Vienna, the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Museum of Contemporary Art Sarajevo, The Gallery of London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of the city of Paris (which organized a retrospective of his work in 2003), the Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the Caixa Foundation in Barcelona.
