Description
Pioneer of the graffiti movement in France in the mid-1980s, Juan-Pablo “Popay” from Ayguavives lives and works in Paris. Renewing the -american- canons of Hip-Hop graffiti under various influences (Comic strip, Free Figuration or Modern Art ...), Popay, tagger virtuoso, master calligraphy, is one of the first European artists to have renewed the genre by decorating his frescoes of picaresque characters, prolific landscapes and feverish 'Freestyles', lyrical and organic abstractions of great strength and real chromatic variety. He was already an outstanding 'writer' and colorist in this emerging movement on the fringes of the art market, which is not yet called 'Street Art'. In terms of medium, Popay diversified its plastic activity very early on, at the turn of the digital turn, not confined to the street, not content with traditional tools, aerosol and markers. He produces a multitude of works on canvas, but also illustrations, in a wide variety of fields: fanzines, flyers, posters, record covers, advertisements, comics. He was also introduced to computer graphics, compositing and cinematographic special effects. In parallel with the quasi-purist activism of underground and urban painting, based on the example of the other side of the Atlantic, Popay's style infuses a new stylistic freedom, between Punk, Alternative Rock, and Hip-Hop. He is an autodidact who, although he has never officially integrated any art school, does not neglect any pictorial style, even academic. Apart from the many graffiti 'crews' then very active in Paris, in free spirit, it haunts the various Parisian schools (Beaux-Arts, Arts-Décoratifs, Faculties of Plastic Art, etc.) as well as various wasteland and artist squatts (Les Fridges, Le Pôle Pi, La Miroiterie, etc…), forging many friendships with other artistic figures of his generation, recognized today.

He is an artist who stands out in the world of Parisian graffiti, Popay creates baroque frescoes, which are between fairy tales and hallucinations. he gets inspired by artist like; Hieronymus Bosch, Combas, Erro, crumb, Jimmy Hendrix as well as from spanish paintings. His paintings are completly made with aerosol, treated however the classical way, by successive glaze.
A slow process where the world becomes more complex giving way to his abstractions, agglutinated vegetation, sea floor or imaginary forests, where a multitude of semi human characters, elves, imaginary faunae dissapears and reappears. His figurative paintings are real futuristic journeys, imaginary and baroque. Which immerses us in his creations, just like Bosch's work does, where each portion of his work is a subject by itself.
