Description

Individual size: 5 x 3 x 3 inches.

“I could start fires..” I could start fires with what I feel for you. Destructive love. Engulfing flames. Burn the world until the ashes fly into space. Nothing left but feeling.

“So I lay here..” So I lay here curled in a home that is not my home (anymore). The sound of the memory. Tire whirring on asphalt. Echoing against the trees, becoming a hum.

“Why do you insist on shattering..” Why do you insist on shattering//hovering your boiling blood over the fire? The heat rises to your heartbeat to eat thru your arteries and pour from your pores.

This cup is one of 48 that make up the installation, “Fragments of Our Love Story.” These cups feature feminine forms which recall the Venus of Willendorf and other historical fertility objects The carvings include many of the artist’s own writings and flow from one cup to another. Just as we hold each other’s stories in pieces and parts, the cups now exist throughout time and space, with many collectors. No two have the exact same words, making each unique in body, color, and content.

This intriguing artwork features a trio of ceramic vessels, each adorned with expressive white text carved or painted onto a dark, moody background. The words weave around the curvature of the vessels, creating a dynamic interplay between form and language. The text seems to deliver a poetic or narrative message, drawing viewers in to decipher the fragmented phrases. The surface of the ceramics exhibits a tactile texture, enhancing their organic and raw aesthetic. Each vessel boasts unique patterns, with bold lines and shapes accentuating the text. This interplay of word and design invites deeper interpretation, making the work both visually and intellectually stimulating. The overall composition exudes a sense of mystery and emotion, compelling observers to engage with its layered meanings and intricate artistry.

Presentation

Alex Hodge, born in 1994, is a contemporary ceramic artist and sculptor based in Georgia, USA. She holds a degree in ceramics from the University of Georgia, where she graduated summa cum laude, and earned her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Miami, receiving several academic awards throughout her studies.

Her artistic practice offers a poetic and critical exploration of femininity through ceramic art. Drawing inspiration from classical antiquity, Greek vases, mythological figures, and female archetypes, Hodge creates works that blend personal storytelling with cultural symbolism. Her pieces often take the form of engraved porcelain cups, narrative wall reliefs, and objects inspired by prehistoric Venus figures, questioning notions of memory, love, strength, and vulnerability.

She employs techniques such as hand-building, sgraffito, painting, and sometimes applies gold leaf to enrich the surface of her ceramics. Each piece functions as a narrative fragment, often inscribed with emotional texts or poetic lines that reflect her inner world and broader reflections on womanhood.

Alex Hodge’s work has been exhibited in various galleries and institutions across the United States. Through powerful series like Fragments of Our Love Story and Behind Closed Doors, she redefines the representation of women in art, embracing a deeply personal yet universal vision grounded in feminism, emotional memory, and art historical reference.
