Description
"Prosôpon" is a series of acrylic plaster masks, directly derived from blister packagings that have no interest a priori. From the Greek theater, this term originally means both "face" and "mask", the etymology emphasizing the idea of face where is the organ of sight and external appearance of inanimate things. These sculptures required no other intervention from the artist than the production of a mold that reveals their anthropomorphic qualities. Their disproportionate, geometric or inverted organs surprise by their hybrid connection with fetishes of Tribal Art and android creations of new technologies. If Angelique's initial intention is to question the aesthetics of packaging, her approach also echoes Readymades and the Dada spirit. These idols offer multiple levels of reading; they are survivals of the magical nature of art, questionings on our consumption patterns and uncertainties about our future in the era of robotization.
Presentation
Angélique is a photographer and a sculptor. Her sculptures are made of thermoplastic and organdy, a sheer cotton cloth, and she creates patterns, seams and embroids her materials.
Her work is focused on cultural codes of our times, still lifes or portraits of real people living and breathing urban culture. Emblematic of her sculptures, the white color emphasizes their fragility and gives shape to negative and positive space. Wrapped in a fabric envelope, her subjects manifest at the same time their presence and their absence.
Angélique's technique borrows elements from the techniques of tailors, sculptors and surgeons. The white fragile material is the support of a real story, a metamorphosed description of her surrounding world. Her objects are crystallization, ultimate pictures of objects or people getting away from reality before disappearing.
