Description

An important large-scale patinated bronze, signed by the artist and dating from the height of his mature period, created during the years of the Second World War.

The work depicts a veiled female figure with her gaze turned upwards, rendered with intense spirituality and extraordinary sculptural sensitivity. The vibrant surface and powerful treatment of the drapery highlight the qualities that established Castiglioni as one of the foremost Italian sculptors of the twentieth century, creator of the celebrated Porta di Sant'Ambrogio of Milan Cathedral and numerous important monumental works worldwide.

Unique work.

Presentation

Master of Twentieth-Century Italian Monumental Sculpture

Among the most distinguished figures of twentieth-century Italian sculpture, Giannino Castiglioni occupies a position of outstanding importance for his ability to unite monumentality, spirituality, and exceptional technical mastery. Trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of Enrico Butti, Castiglioni developed a highly personal artistic language that combined the Lombard sculptural tradition with a modern narrative sensibility, establishing himself as one of the foremost interpreters of public, commemorative, and religious sculpture in modern Italy.

An indefatigable and remarkably prolific artist, he created monuments, fountains, funerary sculptures, medals, and monumental decorative cycles that helped shape the civic identity of Milan and numerous other Italian cities. His sculpture is distinguished by the expressive power of its figures, the vibrant modeling of surfaces, and the ability to transform bronze and stone into living matter infused with profound emotional and spiritual intensity.

His universally acknowledged masterpiece is the monumental Portal of Saint Ambrose () of Milan Cathedral, cast in bronze and inaugurated on 7 December 1950. Widely regarded as one of the most important works of sacred sculpture in twentieth-century Italy, the portal narrates the life of Saint Ambrose through a masterfully conceived cycle of reliefs in which monumentality and spiritual depth achieve an exemplary synthesis. The work was conceived and modeled in the artist's studio in Lierna, on Lake Como, and represents the culmination of his artistic research.

Among his most celebrated achievements are also the monumental sculptural programs of the Monte Grappa Military Memorial, the Redipuglia War Memorial, the Kobarid (Caporetto) War Memorial, the Tomb of Pope Pius XI in the Vatican Grottoes, the Christ the King sculpture on the façade of the Catholic University of Milan, the Fountain of Saint Francis in Piazza Sant'Angelo in Milan, and the Monument to the Martyrs of Piazzale Loreto. These works testify to the extraordinary breadth of his artistic production and to the confidence that both civil and religious institutions placed in his talent.

Today, Giannino Castiglioni is widely recognized as one of the greatest Italian monumental sculptors of the twentieth century. His artistic legacy is of exceptional significance, bringing together faith, historical memory, human compassion, and formal beauty. His works are preserved in museums, churches, public monuments, and private collections, while his name remains inseparably linked to the great tradition of Milanese and Italian sculpture.
