Description
This bas-relief is a major work by Paul FLICKINGER.
This wooden sculpture explores the boundary between sculpture and painting. Created in 198, this piece is part of a brutalist art aesthetic. The composition is organized like an architectural grid where anthropomorphic figures are inserted.
The work of the pigments, acrylics, and patinas emphasizes the rusticity of the material. The forms are angular. The faces, stylized and frontal, observe the viewer with a raw intensity.
The assembly plays on volumes and depths. Each cell becomes a space of narration. The raw wood retains its natural texture, bringing an organic dimension to the whole.
The overall structure evokes a modern totem or a sculpted fresco. The palette of ochre and earthy tones reinforces the ancestral aspect of the composition.
The balance between vertical lines and fragmented figures creates a jerky visual rhythm. The whole presents itself as a complex assembly of wood and pigments.
