Description
The colours of awakening light unfold across Impression. Sunrise 2, moving through pink, blue and violet around a fine line of yellow. There is a quiet pulse to the surface: repeated wooden elements establish a rhythm, while deliberate irregularities make that rhythm seem to soften and ripple.
This is the work’s particular surprise. Solid wood takes on an almost carpet-like appearance, with small deviations interrupting the expected precision of the grid. As the viewer moves, the projecting pegs reveal different proportions of colour and shadow, bringing their physical construction into focus.
Below, a lively passage of curved brushstrokes releases the measured rhythm into sweeping movement. Shared colours connect the two sections, allowing the eye to move between the expansive relief and the concentrated energy of the painting.
In his Impressions series, Nazar responds to nature through the sensations and memories it leaves behind. His admiration for Impressionism, also reflected in the title’s echo of Claude Monet, informs this translation of fleeting light into a lasting material presence.
The work invites both an immediate response to colour and a slower discovery of its intentional imperfections. Its softness is visual, its movement perceptual, and its atmosphere emerges through the encounter between the two.
Presentation
Nazar Symotiuk (born 1992) is a Ukrainian sculptor based in Lviv whose work explores how color, repetition and physical depth shape perception. Working primarily with wood, he creates wall reliefs and freestanding sculptures that connect geometric precision with the changing experience of looking.
His signature reliefs bring together numerous individually positioned elements. Their arrangement establishes rhythms across the surface, while color, projecting forms and the spaces between them respond to light and viewpoint. From a distance, the compositions resolve into expansive patterns; closer inspection reveals their intricate construction and tactile character.
Drawing on his interests in Op Art, Pointillism and Impressionism, Symotiuk develops a sculptural language in which color helps organize space. Across different series, he considers perception, memory, disruption and the relationship between order and instability. The viewer’s movement becomes part of the encounter, revealing connections that remain hidden from a fixed position.
Symotiuk graduated from the Lviv National Academy of Arts, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 2016 and master’s degree in 2018. He is a senior lecturer at the Academy and a doctoral candidate researching Ukrainian interpretations of Op Art.
His international exhibition history includes the Ukrainian Pavilion at NordArt 2021 in Germany and presentations at Mees-Van De Wiele Galerie in Ghent. In 2025, his work featured in the exhibition project Ratio at Mercury Art Center in Lviv. His works are held in private collections across Europe, Japan and the United States.
