Description
Sunrise / Lever du Soleil is a series devoted to the moment light begins to form—when darkness does not end abruptly, but slowly releases its grip. Each work is built as a tactile surface, where mixed media creates a sculptural skin and the composition emerges through pressure, layering, and reflection. Rather than depicting a sunrise as a landscape, the paintings translate it into an experience: a shift in energy, a quiet expansion, a beginning.
Gold leaf and silver leaf act as the series’ core material language. Gold carries warmth, renewal, and a sense of sacred radiance; silver holds the cooler, lunar side of dawn—mist, air, and the first pale clarity. As the viewer moves, the metallic surfaces catch and lose light, so the works change in real time. What seems minimal from a distance becomes complex up close: ridges, fractures, and soft fields reveal how the image is constructed through touch and time.
Texture is not decoration here—it is meaning. Raised passages suggest the horizon line as a physical threshold, while smooth zones offer breath and silence. The interplay between matte depth and luminous leaf creates an optical pulse, like the sun appearing through layers of atmosphere. Lever du Soleil becomes a meditation on transformation: the fragile seconds when the world turns from night to day, and everything—space, body, thought—starts again.
Presentation
Nataliia Krykun, born in 1988, is a Ukrainian ultra-contemporary multidisciplinary artist based in Austria.
Working primarily with monochrome colors and gold leafing, she creates sculptural paintings and minimalist forms that explore depth, texture, and contrast. Her use of monochromatic surfaces, structured reliefs, and carefully chosen materials transforms simplicity into a powerful visual and tactile experience.
Her works are celebrated for conveying universal themes of humanity, identity, and cultural resilience.
Krykun's artwork invites contemplation and stillness, balancing elegance with raw materiality. Her refined aesthetic opens a quiet dialogue between shadow and light, surface and space.
Krykun has participated in numerous international exhibitions and art fairs worldwide. A highlight was the exhibition of her works at the VOLTA Basel and Art Basel Week in Miami, and she is a participant at the Pavilion of Ukraine at the 58th La Biennale di Venezia- “The Shadow of a Dream Cast Upon Giardini Della Biennale".
Her works have also been showcased at Art Fair Vilnius 2023 and in Austria's Krems Museum, within the historic Dominican Church.
She continues her education at the University of Arts Linz, Austria.
