Biography
Datjuluma Guyula is an Australian Aboriginal artist of the Djambarrpuyŋu & Dhalpiyalpi peoples, born in 1973. She lives and works at Gunyangara (Ski Beach) in north-east Arnhem Land. She is a member of the Buku-Larrnggay Aboriginal Artists Cooperative, Yirrkala in north-east Arnhem Land. She is married to Djawa Yunupingu, chief of the Gumatj clan and younger brother of Galarrwuy Yunupiŋu, one of the oldest Gumatj clan chiefs. Her father, Waratjima Guyula, was one of the small number of Djambarrpuyŋu clan members who lived around Yirrkala, while most members of this large clan are based in western Yolŋu Country. There is an ancient sacred connection between this clan and the Rirratjiŋu landowners of Yirrkala, which stems from a shared songline, - the sea tern. Her mother, Naminapu Maymuru, is a Maŋgalili artist well known for her paintings of the Milky Way, as well as her more classical Maŋgalili bark paintings. Naminapu and her family were part of the thriving school of artists that grew up around her grandfathers Narritjin and Nanyin Maymuru.
Datjuluma Guyula follows both of her parents in their artistic careers and forges a strong visual identity as an artist in her own right.
