"Discovery 2019-1" by Kug Kyung Oh is a striking bronze sculpture that embodies the delicate balance between abstraction and figuration. The elongated silhouette, marked by a raw, organic surface, evokes a profound sense of presence—both fragile and enduring. The textured bronze, seemingly eroded by time, creates an interplay of light and shadow that enhances its sculptural depth.
• A Study in Materiality & Time – The artist's mastery of bronze casting brings forth a surface rich in intricate details, resembling the effects of natural aging, erosion, or ancient artifacts uncovered from history.
• Limited Edition – As number 2 of 12, this edition is a rare opportunity to own a sculpture that belongs to a finite and carefully curated series.
• Sculptural Dialogue – The form transcends representation, inviting interpretation. It suggests a figure emerging from time, exploring themes of transformation and discovery.
Kug Kyung Oh is renowned for his ability to translate emotional depth into sculptural form. His work frequently explores the relationship between human presence and impermanence, creating pieces that are not just objects, but experiences. This sculpture speaks to collectors who appreciate the expressive potential of bronze—a material deeply tied to art history yet reimagined in a contemporary context.
"Discovery 2019-1" is an invitation to engage with a piece that merges history, craftsmanship, and emotion. A sculpture that does not merely stand but resonates.
Kug Kyungoh is a South Korean sculptor renowned for his innovative bronze works that explore themes of human existence, nature, and language. Born in 1964 in Iksan-Si, Jeollabuk-do, Korea, he pursued his passion for art by earning a degree from the College of Fine Arts at Wonkwang University in 1988 and later completing his graduate studies at Hannam University in 1997. Throughout his prolific career, Kug has held 32 solo exhibitions in cities such as Seoul, Los Angeles, Jeonju, and Taegu. Notable among these was his 2008 invitational exhibition at Sun Gallery in Seoul and a 2000 exhibition at the Hall of L.A. Radio Korea in Los Angeles. His participation in over 100 art fairs globally, including Art Stage Singapore (2014-2017), Art Basel Scope in Switzerland (2011), and Art Chicago (2010-2011), has cemented his international reputation. Kug's work often delves into the interplay between form and meaning. His "Hangeul Person" series reinterprets the 24 characters of the Korean alphabet, arranging them spatially to represent the human form, thereby bridging linguistic symbols with physical embodiment. His sculptures are characterized by meticulous craftsmanship and a deep philosophical inquiry into the human condition, making Kug Kyungoh a significant figure in contemporary sculpture.
