Description
Vibrant energy radiates from this acrylic composition. Two musicians merge with a kaleidoscopic background. A flutist and a drummer share a rhythmic dialogue. The figures are constructed through intricate geometric planes. Warm tones of ochre, crimson, and gold dominate the canvas. These colors evoke the heat and soul of Cameroon.
Every inch of the surface vibrates with fragmented shapes. Triangles and concentric circles create a visual melody. The artist blends figurative forms with a surrealist edge. This approach transforms a musical moment into a cosmic event. Fine lines define the contours of the faces. Detailed patterns adorn the traditional clothing. The artwork celebrates the spiritual connection between sound and sight. It reflects a deep reverence for heritage and communal harmony. A seamless flow exists between the subjects and their environment. The composition culminates in the steady beat of the drum.
Presentation
The African artist Angu Walters' studio is in the NW Cameroon city of Bamenda which has since 2017 found itself at the very center of a brutal civil war. There are not a lot of places more perfectly remote where a gifted artist seeking to emerge from obscurity faces greater obstacles.
Angu got his start as a student of the noted American-born Cameroonian artist Nzante Spee.
Angu paints in diverse styles, most often abstract figurative and the surreal. In addition to music-themed paintings, his work often focuses on family life and traditional African village life. His works express surrealism because he believes that his dreams are inspirational to his life and works. He often titles his favorite paintings, “The Happy Family”, because to him the family is the foundation on which a successful professional and matrimonial life is built. Many paintings express his special reverence for mothers.
His works are exhibited in galleries world-wide and in Africa at the Cameroon National Museum in Yaoundé. Following the pattern set by his own mentor. Angu has helped guide a number of younger artists.
