Tina Ramchandani is the Manhattan-based interior designer behind the successful design firm Tina Ramchandani Creative, founded in 2014. Her dual passion for discoveries made through her travels paired with a curiosity for beautiful design inspires her work and spirit. Tina Ramchandani's work has been recognized internationally by publications such as Elle Decor, The Wall Street Journal, Architectural Digest, Cottages & Gardens, Lonny, Gotham and Cover.

1. Hello Tina! How would you describe your interior design style and where do you get your inspiration when starting a design project?

Soulful minimalism is my design philosophy as much as my signature style, and it's about me creating warm, modern interiors that capture the core of my clients. It's a look that is clean, refined, yet relaxed. It's breathable.

We begin every project with a design discovery meeting. This is typically a two hour meeting, where we get to know our clients in great depth. We try to understand their intentions for the project, what they want their home to look like as well as feel like, and how they want the home to function. This is our starting point, and it helps shape every project.

2. What have been your favorite past projects?

To be very honest I don't have a favorite. No two projects are alike, no two clients are alike, and it's very difficult to compare or select a number-one! I've learned and grown with every project. Currently we're working on projects up and down the east coast, and we'll be installing a family home in Georgetown shortly. I love seeing the details of this renovation come together. 

3. Would you say that artwork seems to be an important part of your interiors? What connections do you think can be made between art and interior design?

I like to think about art as well as accessories from the beginning of my design process. It's one of the things we discuss during our initial discovery meeting. I ask clients about their existing art, how they approach art and their own collections, and what they gravitate towards. Furniture and finishing is only part of a home. If we don't consider the walls, or the full picture, the room will fall flat. To me, art really brings joy and emotion to the room.

4. Your signature warm modernist style is so recognizable, what advice would you give to people who want to be inspired by it in their interior design?

One of my favorite quotes is by Balenciaga, stating “elegance is elimination". I don't believe every space needs to be fully filled with things. Some spaces require that, yes, but for most homes, selecting just the right things, and not going overboard is the key to a successful space. So I'd suggest by starting with filling a space with things you love, and then pair back until you're satisfied.

5. How influenced are your designs by the location and surroundings in which they exist?

My homes are partially influenced by their surroundings, but mostly influenced by the homeowner. For instance, we created a home in the Hamptons for a client who wanted a very modern interior. The exterior of the home fit right in with the homes of the neighbors, so it didn't stand out in an odd way. But inside the home was clean, modern, minimal. Exactly what my client wanted to come home to.

6. Which contemporary artists, famous or emerging, are a source of inspiration to you?

I'm constantly inspired by art and artists. Contemporary: David Hockney, Ai Weiwei. Emerging: Beau Dunn, Zoe Pawlak, Nikki Patel.

7. Finally, you've built your career digitally. What are your views on the expansion of the online art market and what do you think the art market will look like in the future?

Everything is online, and living virtually is not slowing down anytime soon. Art has been a difficult thing to sell online but with the invention of NFTs, everyone is getting into the art game. And I absolutely love it. Traditional art that you can see in front of you, and tough and feel, will never go away. But now there are new and unique ways to find the perfect art for you. Everyone should be surrounded by art they love!
