Claude Garache

Born in: 1930

France

Claude Garache is a French painter and engraver born in Paris in 1930. He made his first works of art in 1948 and was studied drawing and sculpture with Robert Coutin, the same year. After several trips to Europe, the Middle East and the United States, where he worked for the Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios in California, he settled in Paris and started working in a studio. To describe Garache's work, Dora Vallier describe his nude paintings as "post-abstract" art, the artist became a renowned painter in 1965 thanks to his works of etching. In 1972, Raoul Uba noticed the singular coherence of his work, "animated by a strange power based on successive pokes on the slow and progressive reconstruction of a single body". With the use of a single color, red, he pursues the only subject he has use in his artistic life: the female body. His pieces are present in big institutions in Paris, New York, Washington, Marseille, Vevey and Geneva. In addition, he became friends with several writers, including André Frènaud and Jacques Dupin, and illustrated several books of poetry by Yves Boonefoy, Philippe Jaccottet and Edmond Jabés.
