The birth of drawing dates back in time immemorial; it has often been considered a preparatory stage (sketches, studies) for more “noble” art forms, such as painting.

In modern and contemporary art, drawing accompanied the essential artistic movements and adapted them: geometric abstraction (in the work of artists such as Kandinsky and Paul Klee), surrealism (Salvador Dali, Max Ernst), or cubism (Picasso). Drawing stayed the technique of choice for artists that created comics, a mixed artistic genre, which is getting more and more recognition.

A classic technique par excellence, drawing attracts new audiences, and the creation of art fairs such as Drawing Now, Le Salon du Dessin or the famous Prix du dessin offered by the Daniel et Florence Guerlain Foundation each year are witnesses of the growing interest for this art form.
