Photographie Urbaine

Pour définir la photographie urbaine nous devons d'abord aborder la photographie de rue afin d'en expliquer les différences principales. La photographie de rue fait généralement référence à la photographie des passants qui occupent l'espace urbain, aux portraits pris sur l'instant à la manière d'un documentaire. La photographie de rue est souvent associée à l'âge d'or de la photographie des années 1890 à 1970. Les grands maîtres de cette période restent évidemment Cartier-Bresson (et son Leica favori aussi considéré comme l'appareil ultime de la photographie de rue); Weegee (avec ses clichés de scènes de crime); Robert Doisneau (et le fameux “Baiser de l'hôtel de ville); William Klein (pionnier dans la discipline avec un focus particulier sur les enfants); Vivian Maier; Eugene Atget et bien d'autres qui se sont illustrés dans la prise de vue du paysage urbain.

Avec la résurgence de la photographie de rue en tant que genre à part entière, il semble y avoir une différence notable entre ce qu'on appelle la « nouvelle » photographie de rue et la photo de rue « traditionnelle ». Le sujet de la photographie de rue s'est très progressivement déplacé de la rue elle-même aux hommes et femmes occupant l'espace urbain. Cette technique photo permet aux grands photographes de capter plus en profondeur l'expression des visages et de faire ressortir l'émotion. Cependant, cette perspective néglige certains aspects de la photographie urbaine d'origine. Les bâtiments, et leur architecture s'effacent au profit des visages et de la mise en scène.

A l'image d'une société capitalisme post-moderne et à la consommation de masse, on privilégie le divertissement et l'immédiateté. Il n'y a rien de mal à cela mais il faut l'accepter et en cela se différencie la photographie urbaine.

Similaire à la photographie de rue traditionnelle, la photographie urbaine tente de figer non seulement les gens mais aussi les lieux. La photographie urbaine capture et sublime l'architecture des bâtiments par des cadrages et jeux de lumière dont seul le photographe professionnel a le secret. Par cela, chaque image porte en elle le commentaire de l'artiste sur le milieu urbain : sachant que 50% de la population mondiale vit désormais en ville.

En résumé, la photographie urbaine ne peut être réduite à la simple photographie de rue, elle immortalise aussi l'architecture urbaine opérant avec un plus grand angle. Elle capture tout ce qui se rapporte à l'urbain : elle souligne les lignes des gratte-ciels de Manhattan, les passants ne sont pas forcément le sujet principal, les objets deviennent un sujet de prédilection. La photographie urbaine est aussi critique sur son époque plutôt que simple spectatrice.
