Shodo Galerie

Inaugurated in late 2025 in Paris's 7th arrondissement, the Shodo Gallery, located a stone's throw from the Maison Gainsbourg in the heart of the Carré Rive Gauche gallery and antique district, is the first space in France dedicated to the Art Shodo movement, a contemporary trend stemming from avant-garde Japanese calligraphy. Founded by Sylvain Salvarelli, a passionate collector and traveler to Japan for forty years, the gallery is a direct descendant of the Bokujinkai movement of the 1960s and calligraphy masters Yuichi Inoue and Morita Shiryu. It collaborates with the Tokyo-based Carré Moji gallery, thus strengthening the bridge between the French and Japanese art scenes. The gallery currently exhibits artists of the Art Shodo movement, who take a resolutely avant-garde approach to calligraphy, where gesture and ink become fully-fledged forms of artistic expression. It thus presents some rising figures of the current calligraphic scene such as Gen Miyamura, as well as Mie Okubo, Kazumi Okamoto… The gallery is gradually opening up to other horizons: its founder plans in fact to exhibit French artists working on the line, thus broadening the dialogue between calligraphic traditions and contemporary plastic gestures.
