Biography
Alexis Alary is a self-taught artist, born in the 15th arrondissement of Paris in 1991 who moved to the city of canelé when he was 7 years old. Before practicing painting, Alexis worked as a cook. He also describes the two activities as the basis for working on alchemy.
“To create a dish filled with memories and flavors is to decipher the emotion of taste… to create a canvas is to decipher at every moment the mysteries that exist in us… such is my quest in painting”.
His painting works like a cartography of his quests, drawing lines between logical, spiritual and metaphysical world. The artist uses different mediums: wood, canvas, acrylic, oil, pigments, shoe polish, aerosol spray etc.
His universe creates codes that link the memory of a symbolic past, such as African and Mexican art, to the contemporaneity of street language. Alexis is inspired by Basquiat's explosive instinct and Dalí's subjective thought.
