Nurcan Giz is a Turkish painter born in Istanbul in 1952, recognized for her work in contemporary abstract painting, where lyrical abstraction, material, light, and gestural expression meet. After studying psychology at Istanbul University, she settled in Switzerland to pursue artistic training at the School of Decorative Arts in Geneva. This dual path, combining human sciences and plastic creation, nourishes a deeply introspective work in which painting becomes a space for reflection on memory, emotions, and the invisible forces that shape the human experience.
Since the 1990s, Nurcan Giz has developed a personal pictorial language, free from the traditional codes of representation. Decidedly turned towards non-figurative painting, she favors an intuitive approach where forms gradually emerge from the material. Her work is based on broad areas of color, impasto, transparencies, scratches, drips, and superimpositions that reveal a permanent tension between construction and spontaneity. Her palette, deliberately restricted, is dominated by blacks, browns, ochres, beiges, and bluish-grays, creating silent atmospheres where light seems to emerge from within the canvas itself. Art critics Lidya Harambourg, Jean Libis, and François Arné emphasize the meditative dimension of her work, characterized by a subtle balance between apparent calm and inner energy.
Working mainly in oil on canvas, Nurcan Giz constructs her compositions without prior sketch, letting the creative process guide the emergence of forms. The artist herself speaks of a practice based on listening to her inner world, where personal or collective events can unconsciously influence the birth of images. This constant search for the essential places her work in a reflection on the dialogue between shadow and light, void and matter, memory and time, while leaving the viewer great freedom of interpretation.
Represented by the Galerie GNG in Paris since 1996, Nurcan Giz has exhibited in numerous cities and international institutions, notably in Geneva, Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Amsterdam, The Hague, Berlin, Vienna, New York, Paris, and Karlsruhe. Among her notable exhibitions are Espace des Blancs-Manteaux (Paris, 2005), the Salon d'Angers "Triptyque" (2007), L'Orangerie du Sénat (Paris, 2012), the Musée de Tessé in Mans (2014), the Château-Musée Grimaldi in Haut-de-Cagnes (2014), as well as several solo exhibitions at the Galerie GNG, including those in 2022 and 2026 dedicated to her new research on abstraction. One of her works has also been acquired by the FIAA – International Fund for Contemporary Art. Through a demanding work where abstraction, pictorial material, light, contemporary painting, lyrical expression, and emotion constantly dialogue, Nurcan Giz establishes herself today as a major figure in contemporary abstract painting.
